Goudy Trajan Pro is based on the drawings by F.W. Goudy of his rendition of the capital letters inscribed on the Trajan column in Rome, rather than on his subsequent metal type, Trajan (Title), released in 1930. Goudy Trajan Pro includes almost 1500 glyphs in each of three weights, including: uppercase, alternates, swash caps, small caps, vertically centered small(er) caps, dozens of fleurons, and much more. Supports Latin, Cyrillic and modern Greek scripts. Many thanks to Krassen Krestev, Sergiy Tkachenko, and Adam Twardoch for their suggestions for improving the Cyrillic glyphs; and to Alex Sheldon for his suggestions for swash caps and improved OpenType features.

Since its initial release in 1989, Trajan has risen to international popularity as a distinctive and versatile display type family. Carol Twombly's sensitive interpretation of the Roman capitals inscribed at the base of Trajan's column in Rome serves as a testament to her skills as a designer, and to the craftsmanship of the ancient lettering artists who devised these elegant and enduring letterforms. Responding to requests from our customers for broader language coverage and for more weights, Adobe set out to extend the family. Principal Designer Robert Slimbach added Greek and Cyrillic as well as four new weights - two lighter than the original offering, and two heavier. The extended family now provides users with a range of six weights that vary in personality and function. Alongside his extension of Trajan Pro, Robert also created the Trajan Sans type family, which offers users a contemporary and stylish variation of the original seriffed design (see Related OpenType Packages link below).

Conceived alongside his recent extension of Carol Twombly's Trajan family, Adobe Principal designer Robert Slimbach set out to create a distinctly modern sans-serif display type family that retains the elegance and versatility of the original design. The new san-serif variation exhibits less stroke contrast than its seriffed counterpart, with stylized flared stroke endings that suggest v-shaped terminals cut in stone. While there are several fine san-serif typefaces on the market that are inspired by the monumental capitals of ancient Rome, Trajan Sans is unique in its fidelity to the form of the highly-regarded letters inscribed at the base of the Trajan column. The family is offered in six weights ranging from Light to Extra Bold, with language coverage for Pan-European Latin, Cyrillic and Greek. Trajan Sans can be used to convey a sense of permanence, elegance, and modernity in a variety of display titles and signage.

The inscription on the base of the Trajan column in Rome is an example of classic Roman letterforms, which reached their peak of refinement in the first century A.D. It is believed that the letters were first written with a brush, then carved into the stone. These forms provided the basis for this Adobe Originals typeface designed by Carol Twombly in 1989. Trajan is an elegant typeface well-suited for display work in books, magazines, posters, and billboards.
